One of the objectives of starting Mama Dee’s Kitchen was to be different. There are well over 30 cafes in town and we didn’t want to be ‘just another one’ in an already crowded marketplace. After much deliberation we all decided Mary Street was the best place to set up shop.
As you know, Mary Street is unique with its one-way tree lined street with its many shops. These same shops and shop owners sometimes struggle to compete with the larger franchise stores. We wanted a signature product that would vouch for the authenticity of Mary Street. Our neighbour and good friend, Glen Craig, known by many as Glenbo, suggested naming one of our sandwiches by doing a play on words. Hence the name…….. Mary’s Treat.
Our goal with this popular sandwich was to have a local sandwich which also gives authenticity to the Gympie Region. We call it our local sandwich. The meat is sourced from a local butcher, the Mama Dee’s Kitchen bread roll is made in Gunalda, the cheese is from Kenilworth, the relish and dressings are either sourced locally or hand-made by us. It is no wonder that it was voted best sandwich from over 150 voters.
